Front & Center with John Callaway: Full Reckoning: Life After Combat
At the time of this program, more than 8,000 U.S. military personnel had been injured in Iraq. While many received excellent medical care, others, particularly those in the Reserves and the National Guard, met unanticipated problems obtaining medical care, sorting through red tape, and getting the support they needed when they returned home. Despite wide publicity surrounding the issue, Congressional hearings, and improvement in some areas, the problems continue. John Callaway and his panel examined the challenges facing returning veterans.
Eric K. Schuller was the Senior Policy Advisor to Illinois Lt. Governor Pat Quinn. His areas of concentration are issues relating to Military, Veterans and Homeland Security. Previously, Schuller was the President of TE, INC, an executive recruiting and staffing firm that specialized in the areas of Management Information Systems and Government Security. Schuller spent 22 years in the United States Army and worked in the areas of Rear Area Security and specialized in Military Intelligence and Military Police Operations. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in Business. Schuller resides in the western suburbs of Chicago with his wife and 4 children.
Patricia Hicks is a Director and past President of the Citizen Advocacy Center located in Elmhurst Illinois. Hicks holds an Illinois Teaching Certificate and is employed by Winnetka School District 36, Winnetka, Illinois. In addition to her advocacy on environmental, educational, and governmental issues, Hicks has worked with military officers and Illinois officials to implement procedures and legislation to assist military Reservists and guardsman and their families. Over the past year, Hicks has been an advocate for incapacitated reservists, providing them with advice and tools to access their elected officials. She received a bachelor's degree in Urban Studies and Geography/Environmental Management from Elmhurst College, and her M.A. in Teaching from Dominican.
Rochelle Crump was confirmed as Assistant Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs in November 2003. A native of Longview, Texas, she served in the United States Women's Army Corps from 1971 to 1973, when she joined the US Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office in Chicago. From 1996 to 1998, Crump served as a case worker for a social service agency assisting homeless veterans. She was a member of Mayor Harold Washington's Veterans Advisory Council and was later appointed as the Council's Commissioner/Chairman by Mayor Richard M. Daley. In 1998, Mayor Daley named her the Director/Community Liaison for Veterans' Affairs under the Commission on Human Relations. She earned as AAS in Liberal Arts at Kennedy-King and Truman College and completed her master of science degree from Southern New Hampshire University.
1LT Stephen Rice is a platoon leader with the 233rd Military Police Company in Springfield, Illinois. He received his bachelor of science degree in Criminal Justice Sciences at Illinois State University at Normal. After college he completed the Military Police Officer Basic Course at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. In April of 2003 he was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While in Iraq Rice's platoon conducted Military Police operations to include reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, mobile patrolling and aided in the reinstatement of the Iraqi security forces. On December 27, 2003 he was wounded in action by a roadside bomb in downtown Baghdad. He currently resides in Godfrey, IL.
