Overlooked Aspects of the Battle of the Bulge with 2019 Pritzker Literature Award Recipient Dr. John Morrow, Jr.

Dr. Rob Havers sits down with Dr. John Morrow, Jr. to discuss some fo the lesser-known aspects of the Battle of the Bulge, while touching upon receiving the 2019 Pritzker Military Museum & Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing.

The Pritzker Military Museum & Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing is presented annually to a living author in recognition of an outstanding body of work dedicated to enriching the understanding of military history.

Each year, a selection committee is assembled to nominate deserving candidates and ultimately make a recommendation for selection. Dr. John Morrow, Jr., the twelvth recipient to receive this prestigious award, joined us to talk about his life’s work, interest in writing military history, as well as some of the overlooked aspects of the Battle of the Bulge.

Author or co-author of 8 publications, Morrow is an accomplished military historian and respected professor. His work includes The Great War: An Imperial History, The Great War in the Air, and German Airpower in World War I, among others. He has gained recognition for his ability to demonstrate how the past and the present inextricably intertwine to impact the future and is a deserving recipient of this year’s award. 

Dr. Morrow’s work is intellectually enriching to scholars as well as engaging to his younger, student audience. He encourages intellectual engagement with the past in his mission to better understand the complex relationship between the military and society in the present. This connection between the past and present continues to characterize Morrow’s work as comprehensive and pertinent.

In addition to his academic writing, Morrow teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the history of Modern Europe and has been twice selected as an Honors Professor for superior teaching. He has been an invited lecturer at institutions such as the National War College, the Air War College, and the U.S. Military Academy, and he has chaired the History Advisory Committee to the Secretary of the Air Force, the Research Advisory Committee of the National Museum of American History (NMAH), and the Search Committee for the Director of the NMAH.

Franklin Professor of History at the University of Georgie, Morrow earned his BA with Honors from Swarthmore College and his Ph.D. in Modern European History from the University of Pennsylvania.   

Dr. Morrow, Jr. is a distinguished scholar who has elevated military history as an academic discipline and as a useful tool for scholars and soldiers alike.
