The Battle of Hamel

Maj. Gen. Richard J. Hayes, Jr., The Adjutant General - Illinois National Guard and Michael Wood, Australian Consul-General in Chicago will join Museum & Library interim President & CEO John Schwan for a symbolic ceremony on June 15, 2018 at 9:30 am.

John will MC the ceremony between the Australian Consulate General and the Illinois National Guard to commemorate the centennial of the Battle of Hamel, which occurred on July 4, 1918. The Battle of Hamel was remarkable for its speed, the tactics employed, numerous acts of extreme bravery, and the fact that for the first time in history American troops, specifically Illinois National Guard Soldiers, fought alongside with soldiers from the Australian Army.
