Flying for France: With the American Escadrille at Verdun

The Lafayette Escadrille, which was also known as the American Escadrille, was named after the Marquis de Lafayette -- a hero of the American and French Revolutions.  It was composed of American volunteers in the French Air Service, who opted to serve in the war prior to America’s entry into the conflict.  

The French disbanded the unit on February 8, 1918. Twelve of its members then transitioned into the United States Air Service as members of the 103rd Aero Squadron.
