Knocked Out

July 1944Staff Sergeant H. Neil Gillespie Photograph

The smallest of three islands, the battle for Tinian was fought largely with the use of tanks and artillery that U.S. troops were able to bring ashore with the help of Construction Battalion (Seabee) ingenuity. Within 9 days, the 2nd and 4th Marine Divisions were able to eliminate resistance on the island and seize its airfields.
