Troops Walking Through Destroyed Manila

February 1944Photograph

Though General Yamashita had pulled his forces from defending Manila, Admiral Iwabuchi convinced the troops remaining in the city that they must stay and fight. The battle that ensued left the capital nearly destroyed and led to a severe loss of life for both the Japanese and the Filipino civilians of Manila.
