On the Double

April 1945Private R.A. BaileyPhotograph

U.S. Marines scale the rough terrain of Okinawa as they move inland towards the airfields on the island. Assuming that the lack of resistance on the beaches would continue into the interior of the island, troops covered more ground than expected in the first days of the invasion, only to meet fierce resistance in the hills.
