Les Vainqueurs de la Marne

Garcia Benito, Eduardo (1891-?) Ca. 1918 Lithograph

The First Battle of the Marne was fought between September 6, and September 10, 1914, before the United States entered the war. The battle marked a significant point in World War I. At the beginning of the war, Germany believed the war could be won if German forces could quickly take control of Paris. However, the Allied victory in the battle ultimately halted the German advance on the outskirts of Paris and created the stalemate of trench warfare.

The Second Battle of the Marne also represented an important point in World War I. In both the First and Second Battle of the Marne, the Allies managed to halt a German advance towards Paris which changed the momentum of the war. Allied participants in both battles were hailed as the protectors of Paris.

The victors of the Marne. Honor and glory to those who have saved the freedom of the world. Our heroic soldiers in the red pants defeated in 1914 on the sacred Marne will be immortalized in the legends as the brave among the brave. And you young soldiers of great America, you have entered history with the unpredictable honor of having renewed these glorious exploits alongside the French in 1918.
