The United States flew millions of flights over Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia during the Vietnam War. Bombings decimated transportation systems, agricultural production, and manufacturing capabilities though out Southeast Asia. As early as 1960, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) was sending men to school in the Soviet Union to learn to use missile defense systems and antiaircraft artillery. The Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China equipped North Vietnam with antiaircraft artillery, surface-to-air missiles, rocket propelled grenades, and radar air-defense systems. All told, the United States lost around 3,000 aircraft during the Vietnam War.
