The UH-1 “Huey” helicopter became a symbol of United States involvement in Vietnam. Helicopters transported personnel throughout the war zone, offered armed support to ground operations, and resupplied ground troops. Although Huey’s came equipped with armored seats, many pilots were still killed or wounded by ground rifle fire. In rural areas throughout Vietnam, women and children were expected to stop their day-to-day activities to fire at helicopters when they passed overhead. Pieces like this exemplify the stories of United States service members who stated that they were often shot at by women and children.
