After World War II, many Asian countries experienced political disarray and civil war. Like many other communist factions, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) turned to the People’s Republic of China and the Soviet Union for support. In Indochina, North Vietnam also allied itself with the communists in Laos (Pathet Laos), Cambodia (Khmer Rouge), and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea).
