Robert Bied

Robert Bied is a Chicago-based executive, engineer, and civic leader whose career and public service reflect a deep commitment to innovation, stewardship, and citizenship. Over more than three decades, Bied held senior leadership roles in advanced manufacturing and product strategy, primarily with U.S. subsidiaries of German manufacturing firms, most recently serving as Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Product Management at HAIMER USA. His professional work was defined by technical expertise, disciplined leadership, and strong collaboration across international markets.

In retirement, Bied has devoted his time and experience to nonprofit and philanthropic service, with a focus on military history, maritime heritage, youth education, and civic life in Chicago. He serves as President of Captain Dave’s Foundation and has supported a range of organizations, including the Chicago Yacht Club Foundation, the Great Lakes Naval Museum Foundation, the Soldier Field Foundation, and the Chicago Council of the Navy League of the United States.

His commitment to preserving the history of service and citizenship has made Bied a dedicated supporter of the Pritzker Military Museum & Library and the mission it advances. Through both leadership and generosity, he has helped strengthen institutions that honor those who served and connect that service to the life of the nation.

A lifelong Chicagoan, Bied attended St. Ignatius College Prep and studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Illinois. He is also an avid sailor and a licensed mariner. The Pritzker Military Museum & Library is proud to recognize Robert Bied with the Founder’s Award for his distinguished leadership, his civic generosity, and his enduring support for the institutions that preserve the history of service and citizenship.
