Mauldin’s cartoons from his stateside training highlight many of his early military experiences and observations.  This piece utilizes themes typical of his early works. Commenting on the general adjustment that all new soldiers must make to camp life and life in the Army, Mauldin expresses the universal desire for the creature comforts of home.
