Service Dogs for Veterans: Learn How Canine Companions Serve Veterans

For American military veterans, social support and expert care are imperative for managing physical and mental injuries sustained while serving our nation. Service Animals are trained to provide support specific to the needs of their human counterpart and, to many veterans, companion and service dogs are irreplaceable partners. By helping veterans to manage their symptoms and providing unwavering companionship and support, dogs can help save lives.

Join the Pritzker Military Museum & Library, the Pets for Vets Chicagoland chapter, and the American Veteran Service Dog Academy on Thursday, November 10th at 1:00pm CST in observance and recognition of Veterans Day. Learn how canine companions serve veterans and hear directly from these organizations and a veteran and their service dog about the experiences and impacts of service dogs on their lives.

Pets for Vets is a national organization dedicated to providing a second chance for shelter pets by rescuing, training, and pairing them with America’s veterans who could benefit from having a companion animal. The Pets for Vets Chicagoland chapter serves veterans in Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, McHenry, and Will Counties.

The American Veteran Service Dog Academy is a Chicago-based service dog educational organization that works to reduce the high number of suicides among veterans, and specifically those coping with PTSD, through the love and support of a dog. By training service dogs and teaching veterans to train and care for their own service dogs, AVSDA strives to save veterans one dog at a time.
