In the Armory: The M1 Garand Rifle

In this episode, Dustin DePue digs into our armory to look at the M1 Garand.

Famously called, “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” by General George S. Patton, the M1 Garand was the only semi-automatic standard-issue service rifle of World War II. It gave U.S. soldiers a tremendous advantage in firepower over enemy soldiers armed with bolt-action rifles and ushered in the beginning of a new era of standard issue auto-loading rifles. It was developed by Canadian inventor and designer, John C. Garand in the 1920’s, patented in 1932, and first produced in 1936. It served through the Korean War before being replaced by the M14 rifle in 1957.

DUSTIN DEPUE is the Museum & Library’s Director of Collections. In this position, Dustin manages the Pritzker Military Museum & Library's Special Collections, Archives, and Digital Lab. Additionally, he and his team oversee the acquisition, preservation, cataloging, and display of archival collections, artifacts, photographs, prints, and posters. He holds a Masters in Library and Information Science from Dominican University and a B.A. in Fiction Writing from Columbia College Chicago.
