Propaganda posters showing the People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN) giving orders to United States prisoners of war served a dual purpose. They hung in prisoner of war facilities as a reminder to prisoners of their status; but also in public areas in the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) to continue to encourage civilians to aid in the capture of United States service members. In North Vietnam, United States prisoners were often referred to as war criminals and air pirates.
