British 18 Pound Decorated Artillery Shell

This brass shell is fluted with the inscription of “St. Quentin” on the bottom of the shell. On the bottom of the shell has the inscription, “18 pr.”  The Battle of St. Quentin Canal began on September 29, 1918, as part of the Allied Hundred Days Offensive.  British, Australian and American forces were a singled combined force against the Germans.  The objective was to break through the German Hindenburg Line.  The Hindenburg Line consisted of a series of heavily fortified defenses through Eastern France.  Germany used Saint Quentin Canal as part of the Hindenburg Line.
