Thousands of landing craft would take the nearly 200,000 American troops ashore in their mission to dislodge the Japanese from the Philippines. Prior to the arrival of the main assault, the 21st Infantry Regiment landed on the southern end of the island to clear the beaches and establish a foothold for the arrival of the rest of the 6th Army.
