LCDR (SEAL) John Kainer

41, of Lafayette, LA

On January 18, 2009, LCDR (SEAL) John Kainer peacefully passed away after an 11-year battle with cancer. His exemplary career included assignments at SEAL Team Three, Naval Special Warfare Unit Eight, SEAL Team Two and Naval Special Warfare Deployment Group. During a training exercise, LCDR Kainer experienced a seizure in the middle of a parachute jump. He skillfully deployed his parachute and landed safely. The ensuing medical evaluation revealed a brain tumor and resulted in medical discharge in 1999. In subsequent years following his diagnosis and treatment, John completed three marathons, two raid gauloises adventure races and two ironman triathlons. He was the epitome of a warrior.

In the days, months, and years following the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States, Navy SEALs have been called upon more so than ever to employ their unique set of skills in accomplishing our nation’s most dangerous and covert operations. The photographs and stories in this room honor those SEALs who have made the ultimate sacrifice in support of the war on terror, and are displayed in chronological order of their sacrifice, from left to right. Similar displays can be found on the quarterdecks of the U.S. Navy and Naval Special Warfare Commands.
