Sent to reinforce the Army of Virginia, the Third Corps headed toward Manassas, Virginia on August 14, 1862. On August 20, 1862, Erasmus Corwin Gilbreath was promoted to Captain of Company I of the 20th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Third Corps.
On August 29, the Army of Virginia clashed with Confederate forces under the leadership of General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson at Manassas Junction near the Bull Run River. By the next day, Confederate General James Longstreet had brought reinforcements for Jackson and the Confederate Army outnumbered the Union Army ten to one.
The Second Battle of Bull Run was a staggering loss for the Union and emboldened Confederate General Robert E. Lee to push into Maryland.
