After a winter camped near the town of Yankton on the Nebraska border, Captain Erasmus Corwin Gilbreath’s company was summoned to Fort Abraham Lincoln near Bismarck, Dakota Territory. At Fort Abraham Lincoln, Gilbreath was informed that his company would be assigned to the construction of Fort Custer in Montana Territory 10 miles from where the Battle of Little Big Horn had occurred.
