Gil Barndollar
Gil Barndollar is a Senior Research Fellow at the Center for the Study of Statesmanship and a Non-Resident Fellow at Defense Priorities. Gil has written for The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Foreign Policy, and U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings, among other publications. He provides frequent commentary and analysis on U.S. foreign policy to national and international media and has appeared on CNN, Fox News, and the BBC World Service
At CSS, Gil is working on a book examining America’s All Volunteer Force, conscription, and future national security threats. He has conducted field research with the armies or security forces of Finland, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Colombia, and Ukraine. His work has been enabled by grants from the Smith Richardson Foundation, Pritzker Military Foundation, Charles Koch Foundation, and the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center.
From 2009 to 2016, Gil served as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps, deploying twice to Afghanistan and to Guantanamo Bay and the Persian Gulf.
Gil holds an AB in history from Bowdoin College and MPhil and PhD degrees in history from the University of Cambridge.
