The Hundred Days Offensive was a series of successful offensives launched on the Western Front by the Allies against the Central Powers. The series began August 8, 1918, and continued through the Armistice on November 11, 1918. Beginning with the Battle of Amiens (ah-myăn), the offensive included the Second Battle of the Somme (som), the Battle of Havrincourt (hav-rin-cor), the Battle of Saint-Mihiel (săn-mee-ell), the Meuse-Argonne (myooz-r-gone) Offensive, the 5th Battle of Ypres (eepr), and several others. The offensive not only forced the German army to retreat behind the heavily fortified Hindenburg Line, it also broke through the line in various places. The Hindenburg Line consisted of a series of heavily fortified defenses through Eastern France. The Allies made the largest gains of the entire war and pushed the Central Powers out of France. The offensive would cost just over one million casualties for the Allies and 1.1 million casualties for the Central Powers.
