Faces of Valor: American Soldiers from the Spanish American War and the War in the Phillippines

Faces of Valor: American Soldiers from the Spanish American War and the War in the Philippines included 20 portraits newly printed from original glass plate negatives made between 1895 and 1920.

Also on display were maps of the combat areas in a multimedia presentation, authentic service medals from the campaigns, military and historical literature from the era, and an antique Folmer Graflex studio portrait camera.

Taken with great care in professional studios, each portrait is a glimpse of its subject's personality. They were given to family & friends back home, and also to comrades in arms. The most popular size was known as the carte de vista, a small photograph on cardstock. Like collectible cards today, these likenesses were traded and treasured.
