In October 1864, all the Indiana Volunteer Regiments in the Army of the Potomac were consolidated into one: the 20th Indiana Infantry Regiment. The reorganized regiment fought to the final day of the Civil War.

Erasmus Corwin Gilbreath mustered out of volunteer service on October 18, 1864. On February 14, 1865, Gilbreath rejoined the Union Army and was appointed Lieutenant Colonel in General Winfield Scott Hancock’s First Veterans Corps. Gilbreath was then 24 years old.
