Front Lines of the 3rd Division

Ca. 1918 Map

The Second Battle of the Marne (mahrn) was the last major German offensive on the Western Front of World War I. This German attack through Belgium was designed to be a diversion for a larger attack on the British forces in Flanders.

The German attack near Rheims (reemz), France along the Marne River stalled shortly after part of the German forces crossed the river. The United States 3rd Infantry Division would earn the nickname “Rock of the Marne” for continuing to hold the line and even counterattacking the overwhelming and advancing German forces. The Germans failed to break through the defenses and the Allies counterattacked.
