Established in 1915 as the American Committee for Armenian and Syrian Relief, the American Committee for Relief in the Near East raised funds and supported aid to peoples devastated by the conflicts in the Ottoman Empire before, during, and briefly after World War I (1914-1918). By 1923, between 1 million and 1.5 million ethnic Armenians were killed by the Ottomans.
